1906 Cannabis Edibles:
A Case Study In Cannabis Packaging
When you have a product that is thoughtfully engineered, loved by its consumers, and helps do “all the life stuff better” – it’s packaging should be equally engineered to showcase it. 1906 wanted better packaging stuff too. EE responded.
About Cannabis Packaging & Design
When Andy Hort of Earth Enterprise was introduced to 1906 – a cannabis manufacturer that is redefining edibles with delicious fast-acting experiences – he understood the challenge of designing and producing its brilliant packaging. His vision incorporated super fine embossing and foil, with a laydown of solid colors to add a tactile feel, from the many paper different sheets. The packaging had to reflect the perfect balance that 1906 edibles bring to their consumers.
Cannabis Edibles From 1906: The Custom Packaging Story Begins

From Concept To Delivery: A Custom Packaging Roadmap
Andy identified a challenge, which the previous printer could not overcome, and worked with his favorite designer to overcome some significant obstacles. Together they customized the packaging to include very fine embossing, delicate foil application, in tandem with an intricate lay down of solid color, on numerous sheets, to achieve the 1906 look. He also worked with the die maker so that very fine type could be applied in the printing process, as well as with the ink manufacturers to give a deep dark lush laydown. Four different color schemes were produced, each one with 2 different sizes for a 6 pack and 3 pack. Simply put: “We came up with a higher registration, better qualify and output”, said Andy.
Prototyping & Custom Packaging
From concept to prototype – the process took a quick 4 weeks – with a great deal of attention on the fine details – considering this job was much too big to take risks on rushing. The final production came six weeks later, and all packaging was shipped to Colorado.

Process
In total, Earth Enterprise produced “Midnight, Go, Bliss, Love, and Chill” – 269,000 pieces, printing on a Neenah Classic Crest paper, and ran it on half sheets. This solution worked perfectly for the die necessary for each box, avoiding the saturation of too much ink for a full sheet, (problem the previous printer experienced). All are printed with PMS colors and finely registered, along with clear foil, with registered emboss, with a die-cut window, and clear Interdeck UV inks.
The 1906 and Earth Enterprise collaboration was a perfect match: 1906 is dedicated to Technology and Plant Power, combining carefully selected pesticide-free cannabis with plant medicines to create very specific enhancements. Earth Enterprise is the greenest printer in America: every project they work on is 100% Carbon Neutral Printing, their offset presses are greener, they use no VOC, no solvent in press wash, blanket wash and coatings. They recycle all their own chemistry in house, dump zero water, their inks are 40–60% vegetable based, no solvents, no heavy metals, and are fully biodegradable, no petroleum products. And they run off green energy.
Custom Packaging- Steps To Success
Custom packaging is more than a creative process, it requires a form of architectural design:
- Analyzing the requirements of the client, which involves a clear understanding of “use cases” for the final packaging.
- Construction Specification Design
- Custom color creation for identical match of clients preferred color scheme and campaign
- Creation of dieline(s)
- Creation of a hand-constructed prototype
- Production of final printed prototype for client approval
- Specifications for print and packaging manufacture
- Final production and inspection of luxury packaging
- Shipping, Storage and Distribution of final packaging.
